The future of various audio formats: Compact Disc, Cassettes, LPs, etc...?
Do you think that CDs and LPs will still be around in 20 years? I would imagine that cassettes don't have much of a future. CDs will probably be around for quite awhile though.
Other then MP3s, are there any other formats that will be introduced to the market for releasing albums?
Vinyl records will definitely still be popular 20 years from now. Too many DJs & audiophiles love the sound of vinyl too much to give it up anytime soon. And if the trend for bass heavy music continues, vinyl's popularity will continue to grow since bass is vinyl's strength. (It's weakness is very high highs.)
CDs might loose favor with DJs since some of them have already switched to .wav files & 320 Kbs or higher MP3 files. (Serato Live & Final Scratch 2) But if the mass market of MP3s stays at as low of quality as it is now, I can't see MP3s ever killing off CDs.
If the mass market of MP3s quality equals or surpasses CDs, I can see CDs dieing out.
More likely it will be something new that comes out that kills of CDs. Because MP3 has gained a reputation with the general public of sounding really bad. That's because there's so many MP3 files recorded such a horrible sounding quality of 192Kbs that a lot of people think that all MP3 files sound that bad.
If CDs die off, I think what most likely will happen with CDs is what happened to vinyl. The major labels will pull them from the main stream market & push something else on them whether the buying market wants it or not.
Cassettes? I thought cassettes had already started dieing when CDR recorders became so cheap. Sure a lot of people still have cassette tapes, players & recorders, but how many people are still buying prerecorded cassette tapes?
SACD & audio DVD showed promise, since they sound better than CD, but they appear to have flopped & for now it doesn't look like either will ever catch on with the general public & will remain as a small niche market.
