Why is it that in all interpretations of the universe, stars are all on the horizontal plane and not vertical?
It's hard for me to elaborate but I'll try. Everytime I watch something on TV or a movie, and the universe is shown, we see the vastness of space and all the stars. How come GENERALLY everything has expanded in a horizontal plane. When there are explosions in space everything goes in every direction right? so why are spiral galaxies generally flat and not more like a jumbled up slinky? Also, when you see space travel, everyone always flies forward or left or etc, but never up or down (vertical), why?
It's very hard for us to conceptualize 3-d space. We grew up on the earth which is flat, or looks flat if you don't look too closely. Our system of navigation is 2-dimensional, four directions. Our maps are 2-dimensional. Imagine a 3-dimensional map on paper. How would you do it? You'd almost need some new kind of media, like a 3-d hologram or a 3-d 'point cloud' on a computer screen.
And beside that, our galaxy -is- kind of flat. It was originally spinning and has widened out perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The solar system is also relatively flat, for the same reason. So it's not completely unreasonable to see space as flat, at least near space.
