Who would you consider the 5 most important French-Canadians of all time and why?

Have to agree with Pierre Trudeau - whether Conservative Canadians like to acknowledge it or not, he more than any other leader, turned us into country tolerant of other races, other beliefs and other lifestyles.

Would also put Mayor Jean Drapeau on the list. - People who had never heard of Quebec and especially Montreal, became very familiar with it after he brought the Island of Montreal up to date with other major cities with the construction boom of the 60's and the building of the Montreal Metro system and with Expo67. Also without his little lottery to upgrade Montreal Hospitals, we might not have a Lottery Foundation - the Federal Government saw how successful it was and took it over and made it nationwide. Sadly, he did not foresee the economic slump until it was too late to forego the Summer Olympics which left Montrealers picking up a huge tab. Sad that people have forgotten all the good years and things he did and remember one call he made that was not the best one but it's failure had as much to do with economics of the day and the souring politics in Quebec - neither one which was his doing.

Maurice Le Noblet Duplessis - accomplished both good and not so good for Quebec. I personally think he was way too heavy handed and ran Quebec more as a little dictatorship than a democratic entity. Like many other politicians around the world, his history is one of the very good and the very suspect. Like his memory or dislike, he was a very important person in Quebec's history.

Brother Andre - an icon to French and English Roman Catholics in Quebec. It is thanks to him in part that Canadians (Montrealers in particular) have that magnificient piece of architecture - The St. Joseph's Oratory - a shrine to the memory of Brother André. You do not even need to be a Catholic, or even a Christian, to recognize that this man was a special part of Montreal history. It is not for nothing that the Vatican will bestow a sainthood on him later this year.

Well there is my five. I can't agree with Celine Dion - she's was a great singer at one time but now she has become a great screamer and being rich does not make her one of the most important but it is nice for her and her family.
Rocket Richard - well he certainly was one of the few things where English and French hockey fans (Montreal Canadiens fans) agreed on so that's a good thing in his favour aside from his ability to play that puck right into the opposition's net.
The Dionne Quints - actually aside from being treated like something from the circus by our own government and by people from all over - today that would be considered child abuse and it should have been seen as that then - they were an interesting and truly a sad public (never private) story. That they didn't all end up in rubber rooms before their 21 birthday is a tribute to their own character and the way Canadian's and Americans treated them is both countries shame to bear.
