Also Sprach
What are some of the greatest openings in a musical piece?
I vote for Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra" for its stunningly original sunrise - few works start off so brilliantly. What other great openings are out there?
Some more great ones:
* Cyril Scott: Neptune - reminds me of Also Sprach Zarathustra's opening.
* Richard Strauss: Alpine Symphony (another great sunrise sequence)
* Richard Wagner: Das Rheingold intro (has a wonderful sense of "pay attention to the story about to be told")
* Carl Orff: Carmina Burana
* John Williams: Star Wars
The most obvious example would be Beethoven, 5th Symphony. It's hardly to imagine that he wrote several sketches before coming to the version we all know.
A wonderful opening is the introduction to Wagner's Rheingold. Starting from Eb in the Cello's and Double basses Followed by a kind of Canon on a broken chord of Eb by the French Horns. It goes on and on for minutes.
The opening of the Second movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony is overwelming.
The opening of Mahler's 1st Symphony with it's long Flageolet A in the Strings. Starting from complete silence.
As a French Horn player, I like (or hate, or both if you have to play it) the opening of Bruckner's 4th Symphony.
And last, but not least. The poor Bassoon player who has to do the opening of Strawinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps.
But what a wonderful feeling if it turns out well and that Spring day, filled with magic and horror can start.
