Are cloth diapers worth it?
My daughter has very sensitive skin and I heard that cloth diapers are better on the skin. I don't mind the price for them but how do you wash them? Is it really a hassle to get them clean? How do you keep the odor down? Any experienced moms out there to help me understand what I'm getting into? I already looked into a diapering service but they don't come to my town. How many should I buy for a 6 month old and whats the best for quality and convenience?
6 months old is really a wonderful time to buy cloth diapers, simply because they start peeing and pooping less at that age (as compared to newborns) and it's really not that much different from normal diapering.
they are better for the skin, as long as you wash them properly, and they're not hard to get clean. we started solids at 6 months with my son and at that point his poop got more solid-y -- you just dump the solids into the toilet. if there's poop stuck to it (sorry for being so direct), then hold it while dipping the diaper into the bowl and flush it -- the swishing water gets everything out and then it's good to go in the washing machine. I always wash mine on hot water and I try to line dry them. they do get a little stained but sunlight helps bleach them naturally (you're not supposed to use normal bleach with them). pee diapers just go into the pail like normal. I have a garbage can with a metal lid on it and have never had a problem with odors or smell. we wash ours every 3 days or so and have a big stash and it's been like that since my son was about 6 months old. if you get 12 or so, you'll be doing wash every day or two -- my son generally goes through 6 or so a day (we do use a disposable at night).
you'll want to look into pocket diapers or all-in-ones (AIOs) if you want them to be as easy as possible. we have all pocket diapers and they're easy enough for my husband to use (which says a lot, eh?). it's just nice, in general, to have cloth diapers because you never run out and you're doing well with the environment.
the only thing you have to worry about is detergent build up. there are certain detergents that are better than others and you should wash them a certain way (if you order any, they come with washing instructions). that's the only catch -- other than that, our CDing experience has been wonderful.
