Is there any real benefit hooking up the video leads to a AV Receiver?
I have seen many installs of Audio Video Systems. One option is the Video Leads via HDMI or Component Video Cables through the A/V receiver, then back out to the Monitor/Television.
I am under the impression the direct link from incoming source to viewing or audio component has less resistance due to less connections, and the results are cleaner video and audio.
But many Satellite and Cable hookups are sent to the A/V receiver first. I understand the control factor, and one remote ease of use; but how about the quality of the signal? What is the optimum hookup for the highest fidelity?
I understand also, that the higher quality A/V receivers may handle the connection better than a lower end consumer model. Still to me, more connections equals a poor signal compared to a direct connection.
I have intermediate knowledge in this field, so please, novice installers and novice opinionated need not answer this question unless you've better sources than I do.
Pretty much all of what you say is correct. With digital signals however (transmitted by HDMI or DVI) using good interconnects, there really should be such a marginal decrease in quality going through the receiver that it should be essentially undetectable. With analogue signals such as your component video it is possible that there will be a slight (and really probably undetectable) decrease in fidelity by going through an intermediate. As you say, a good A/V receiver vs a lower quality one will also make a difference.
In my case, I send everything through my receiver because of a) the control factor, b) the ability to use a single HDMI cable up to my monitor and c) the fact that my receiver has a better scaler in it than my monitor does. The real test for you though should be to try hooking up direct vs via the receiver and see what you think. I did this for each of my individual components (BluRay, XBox, Cable Box) and felt that going through the receiver was either as good or better than going direct so the added advantage of better control was well worth it.
