Am I on track to get into NYU?
I am currently a sophomore with a B+ GPA (3.3) and I haven't taken my SAT's yet but on my PSAT i got a 1700 with no preparation so I think on my real SAT I should be able to get at least a 1900 (I am a good test taker in general, the only reason my GPA isn't higher is because of work not handed in). I am looking to go to NYU for recording arts in which I already have a great portfolio including a completed album which I completely produced and composed and many smaller side projects or works which I am featured on. Also, I'm not sure how serious they take athletics, but for my age I am an excellent track runner and I'm sure I would be very useful on a division III track team such as theirs. Am I on track to being accepted at NYU or do I need to make changes in order to have a good chance?
In 2008 NYU did not accept any student with a 3.6 GPA or lower. However, there were students who had 3.75 GPAs and had received 2080 on their SAT who were still rejected. A 1700 on your PSAT with no preparation is extremelly impressive, but a 1900 on your SAT 1 on a college application to NYU is not. To apply to a school like NYU, your goal for the SAT should be 2100 minimum. Work hard this semester to get a 4.0 and raise your GPA. Start planning your schedule as a junior; make sure you take AP classes You Know you will be able to handle. Taking AP classes will raise your GPA and will give you college credit if you do well on your AP tests.
You need to remember that NYU is a dream school for thousands of students, and that a good GPA and SAT score are not enough because there will be many others Just Like you. If you're on the track team at school, work hard to make it to CCS and farther. Work on making your great portfolio even greater. Remember: there are thousands of other people working just as hard as you and even more who are working harder.
You have a chance if you start working hard right now. It would be great if you retook the PSAT as a junior and got a score that would qualify you for the scholarship. Study hard for the SAT 1 & 2: borrow books from the library or take a summer class. Your junior year is the most important year in high school - don't screw it up. When you apply for the university, make sure you write a fantastic essay. Work hard, raise those grades and test scores, continue to perfect the qualities that make you stand out, and you'll have a good chance of being accepted by NYU.
