Can someone suggest a compact & portable setup to play music in a taxicab?
I'm a taxi driver, and our cabs are equipped only with AM/FM radios. (I don't have an assigned cab, & drive a different cab each day.) I'd like to listen to jazz while driving, and would appreciate up-to-date suggestions on some small and portable equipment (complete with speakers) that I could remove and take with me at the end of my shift.
One idea might be to attach the equipment to the dashboard with velcro. Obviously headphones are not an option. Also, there are no cigarette lighters in the cabs, so whatever I get would have to have its own power source.
So for all you people who are familiar with Ipods, MP3 players etc., I will appreciate your suggestions.
I'm just now looking at some MP3 songs for sale on amazon.com, and thinking about how nice it would be to listen to something besides the dispatcher, such as Emily Remler, Chet Baker, John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
There are a couple of ways of doing this. First, I would recommend a portable MP3 player such as an iPod. Whatever model you choose is up to you, though I would recommend an iPod because it has the most attachment options of all of the MP3 players out there. I suggest an MP3 player because they're designed to run on their own power source, so its a good option since you don't have a cigarette lighter.
There are also quite a few options for you to choose from when it comes to attaching the MP3 to your cab. You can use velcro, as you suggested. There also a variety of MP3 cradles and docks for cars out there, so look into those.
As for playing the thing, there are also a few ways. If your radio has a tape player, you can simply plug in a cassette tape-transfer kit into the headphone jack of the MP3 player and play the MP3 player through your tape deck. I'm sure you've seen those: they look like a cassette tape with a wire running from it that comes with most portable CD player kits.
Another way is that many MP3 players either come with or you can buy separately a radio transmission kit, which would allow you to wireless transmit music from your MP3 player to a radio channel of your choice. This way you can play your music and have it streamed to your radio that way.
