The grammatical foundation is the same for all regional varieties of Spanish. In fact, there are less differences than those between British and American English.
You can start by getting tuition in Spanish and then make friends with local Spanish speakers so that you can learn their local expressions and pick up their accent.

I'm truly sorry you didn't like my answer. As a Spanish and ESL/EFL teacher it's the best advise I can give you.
You should start by learning the basics and then you can move on. I don't think you'd advice anyone learning English to start by picking up slang. And that's what it is. Tex- Mex Spanish is just one variation among many. Who can you learn best it from? From a native speaker!!!
I don't know how old you are, but I guess you're either a young adult or an adult, otherwise you wouldn't be allowed here. And I can tell you, above the age of 12, most of us use deductive reasoning in learning whereas below that age most people use inductive reasoning. There's a window in between with individual variations when we move from one to another and vice versa. That's why I am suggesting you take a serious course as a kick off and an introduction to move on towards a local variety of the language.
Therefore, I don't think my answer is being careless but it's indeed the outcome of many years devoted to the field of Methodology and Didactics of the teaching of foreign languages. I might put my answers in a nutshell but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about.
I hope you understand where I come from and that I've made it clear my reason for suggesting a good course in basic Spanish.
