Church Bells May
What causes a person to hear something no one else can hear?
During lunch recently[October 1 2008] I heard church bells ringing. The bells were carried on the breeze. It is hard to describe what I heard but I have pinpointed it to three types of bells. It sounded like a bell in an ancient clock.The bell sounded like an alarm- during an emergency when people needed to be alerted about danger.It sounded like a tolling bell. I grew up Catholic so hearing the Angelus at noon was a normal experience. However, there is no Catholic church in the community where I live and work. Nobody else heard the bells. When I mentioned it to a nurse, she said it may be ringing in my ear. I reject that idea because I know what I heard.A teenager came to me and asked me what it means to hear bells that nobody else has heard. I answered her but I felt that I had been the table topic and she was present; or someone had shared the information with her. What are some reasons for such an experience?
Hmm, a few things come to mind.
1. It sounds like this has only happened once. If so I wouldn't worry. If it begins being more frequent, maybe there is actually something wrong.
2. Where you half awake. It is considered normal to have auditory hallucinations when you're not quite fully awake.
3. Bipolar disorder can cause auditory hallucinations. Do you ever feel so full of energy you can't sit still? If so, ask your regular doctor and he or she can help.
4. Other mental disorders can cause hallucinations. Schizophrenia: are you between 15 and 25? That's when schizophrenia usually starts? But there would probably be other symptoms so that's probably not it.
5. Could it be like you had a song in your head. It's really weird and neat. I have a fan in my room and very often my mind will try to force a tune from a song I know onto the white noise the fan makes. Sometimes I have to check to see if the radio is on. If I turn off the fan, it goes away. Kind of neat, but nothing to worry about.
6. Have you recently begun taking antidepressants or increased the dose or changed medicine? Within the first 3 weeks of a change it is common, at least it is with me, to hear songs and tunes in your head much more frequently than normal. It eventually goes away.
7. Have you been taking any illegal drugs? That kind of hallucination is usually visual instead of audio though.
8. It is very common to hear random noises and have your brain try to arrange them into some kind of sense. Like my fan in #5 above. It's a gestalt thing where your mind tries to impose order on disorder and make a whole that is bigger than the sum of its parts.
But mostly, if it doesn't happen again I wouldn't worry. If it does there are lots of sane reasons for hearing things. Including what the nurse said about ringing if it's combined with the gestalt thing in #8. Especially if it pulled up a tune from your childhood.
I wouldn't worry unless it continues to bother you. Then I'd see a doctor for a hearing check up or a psychologist to verify that your are in fact not crazy. It'll put your mind at ease.
Or maybe you're just now discovering a great new sense of inner rhythm.
