What is diff between jazz, blues, bebop, boogie...? ?
Well I've listen to Jazz from the one of the most Jazz players Bill Evans Trio and others, but it's mainly entitled JAZZ, how can i tell the diff if i'm doing a music exam..?
So what's the difference with the rhythm, sound or beat..?
Let's get this straight first:: jazz and blues, while having similarities in cultural origins, are two completely different styles of music. Elements of blues can be found in jazz performances, but they are still different and unique.
The term "jazz" describes a number of different musical styles. the origins are American, in the black community, and occurred in places like New Orleans, Kansas City and other locations (many in the south) in the early 20th century.
One easy way to hear the origins of modern jazz is to listen to the music of King Oliver and the work he did with the young Louis Armstrong. Most people know Louis as a popular singer and musician, but his early work was groundbreaking in the formation of what later became modern jazz.
"Bebop" is a term used to describe the new sounds and ideas being created in the 1940s by groups of musicians working mostly in New York. The core of that group included Charlie Parker, who is generally regarded by historians as the driving force in the movement, along with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and others. The creation of the new ideas took place at a time when WWII was underway, and many larger bands had to cut their size and performances because of the war effort and travel restrictions. Big band music was still popular, but was dominated by white bandleaders. The bebop movement was something created in small group settings, with the improvisational style created as a kind of counter to the tighter structure of large group arrangements.
Parker was a student of music as well as a musician, and in spite of his personal demons (including a terrible heroin habit), he developed new ideas in jazz chord structure, melodic improvisation and in extending the range of familiar songs into something almost unrecognizable. His influence was so great that nearly all serious jazz musicians were falling under his influence by the early 1950s.
Today, i would have to say that Wynton Marsalis is one of the primary movers in jazz, not just because of his great skills, but because of his untiring desire to educate Americans on the jazz culture. he has created music in a wide variety of genres, including classical, and has kept alive the foundations of jazz in our culture. if you examine his musical output in the past 25 years, it's like a history lesson in jazz.
To try to divide up the different styles of jazz would take a book, so I urge you to read anything written by Leonard Feather, an accomplished British jazz musician who had an encyclopedic knowledge of the jazz art form.
