Great Jazz
Can anyone tell me some information about Jazz and/or the Great Depression?
Anything would help... Links or just information. I'm specifically looking for Jazz that hapened around the time of the Great Depression. Thanks.. 10 points being given!
Before I give you that information, you should know what was before and after.
In 1917, the Original Dixieland Jass Band recorded the first jazz record. It was a white jazz band and what they recorded was the beginning of an era, which we can call the Jazz Age. Musically more significant were the recordings of King Oliver and His Creole Jazz Band from 1923 with young Louis Armstrong. The most interesting recordings of the Jazz Age were recorded between 1923 starting with these recordings until 1931. The music of this period is usually called hot jazz.
The recording industry felt the crisis of 1929 and recordings became rarer and rarer. People didn't have enough money and the radio became much more important.
1932 was the worst year for the recording industry and several bands. Many of them had to disband. There are practically no records of 1932.
I would consider jazz recorded between 1931 and 1935 as jazz of the Great Depression. After that, it was the time of the big bands with orchestras like the ones of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey (w young Frank Sinatra) and Count Basie.
Typical jazz from Great Depression is something between Hot Jazz and Big Band Era Jazz. It's not that hot anymore but it's not typical swing music of Big Band Period either.
A typical Great Depression label is Crown. One of the best orchestras recording with this label was Joel Shaw & His Orchestra (a pseudonym for Gene Kardos & His Orchestra), or Adrian Schubert & His Orchestra, or Charlie Palloy & His Orchestra. What Benny Goodman recorded between 1931 and 1935 is also Great Depression jazz. Let's not forget the last recordings of lovely Annette Hanshaw...
