I think i burned my finger with hot sauce?
is this possible? i went to tijuana flats earlier and put my finger in the hottest hot sauce, and now it stings so bad. does that even make sense?
Contrary to popular opinion, you CAN 'burn' your skin with hot sauce. No open wound is necessary. All hot peppers contain Capsaicinoids and the strongest and most common of the Capsaicinoid family is Capsaicin. It is so strong that even a solution of 1 part Capsaicin to 100,000 parts Water is still powerful enough to blister your tongue. Some hot sauce has a high enough concentration of Capsaicin that contact with the skin will produce a burning sensation.
If you still see sauce on your finger, run it under water. Pat your finger clean with a paper towel, using a new spot with each pat so as to remove as much sauce as possible. Don't rub it off as it will actually push the sauce deeper into your skin. Clean your finger with a lot of cool water and mild handsoap. Continue to run cool water over the affected area, taking a break every 10 minutes or so until the burning sensation has subsided. If you have symptoms lasting more than an hour or so, you should seek professional medical attention.
