Why can't I get over my fear of insects?
Every time I see or think about an insect or spider, I literally start to cry. Bugs scare me so badly that if I see one, I start to shake, scream, cry, and spazz out. I live in a basement infested with tons of bugs and spiders. I've seen two giant centipedes on my walls and nearly had a seizure, there's bugs crawling on my floor, and there are so many spiders. I wake up every morning with spider bites on multiple parts of my body, and I am so scared that I can't even go into my room anymore without being scared. Even when I sleep upstairs on the couch I feel like there are bugs crawling over my skin and biting me. It is literally driving me insane. I keep my room completely spotless but there are still creepy crawlies and spider webs. Please help! I just can't get over these fears and it's making me lose sleep and my mind ):
I'm not sure what to say. If you are really getting bitten every day, that's not what I would call a phobia. If something really is hurting you all the time, wanting to avoid it is common sense rather than a phobia. Maybe this is a problem for an exterminator, not a psychologist.
Phobia is treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy. The Handbook of Self-Help Therapies says that the book Living with Fear by Marks (out of print but available from some booksellers) is comparable in effectiveness to conventional therapy for phobia.
