Keep tempo with your feet or any part of your body?
Hey there
I read a James Galway masterclass and he said not to count the tempo with your body.
Why could it be wrong?
Why couldnt it be wrong?
I mean, JAMES said! its gotta have some truth...but rules are very flexible in music, arent they?
I have been present at many Galway masterclasses and such - I actually was part of the Guinness Book of World Records performance with him this past August - world's largest flute ensemble ( about 2,000 who actually signed the paperwork - more played). Yes, using physical gesture or movement to keep time is advantageous - except when we see performers who are so involved that they are flapping and swooning so much that it is counter-productive, and a visual distraction to the audience. My own flute students are accustomed to me closing my eyes at points in their lessons so that I can hear what they are doing, rather than be swayed by physical gestures that might mislead me. Then we can determine if that gesture actually was a manifestation of interpretation that WAS evidenced in the sound, or if they were just *doing the Chicken Dance*, as I say. I have seen Sir James work with players to evoke MORE expression - and I have seem him stop people from rolling and swooning that has NO musical benefit whatsoever. It's all a matter of situation and degree. I will be playing a chamber music job later today in a large echo-filled castle, while people are having drinks in the great hall. It will not always be easy for us to hear - so body gesture for cues, rits, etc., will be mandatory. Were we to play some of that same literature in a concert situation, we could be far more subtle in gesture, yet far more expressive musically.
