why do some people in japan wear white masks over their mouth and nose?
is the air quality bad or something?
They do it for a number of reasons.
1. Pollen allergy (hay fever). Some people find that wearing a mask reduces their allergic reaction to pollen allergies. Japanese people are fairly sensitive to the pollen of the white birch tree, Japanese cypress tree and especially cedar trees. The large numbers of cedar trees growing throughout Japan are the legacy of postwar afforestation projects.
2. To prevent the transmission (both ways) of the flu virus.
3. Runny noses. It is considered impolite to blow your nose in public. Many people simply let their noses run into the face mask.
4. Aroma therapy. Scented oils are added to face masks and worn to relax or stimulate based upon what is desired.
5. Fashion. Used as an accessory. Masks are decorated in keeping with trends or personal taste.
