What type of music did your parents listen to?
I know this question is asked quite a bit, but I just found some of my dad's old cassette tapes and oh the memories! ;-P
In the box of tapes I found there is Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, David Allan Coe, The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Pink Floyd as well as a bunch of tapes that have no labels on them...I haven't listened to them yet, so I'm not sure what they are. He listened to a lot of different kinds of music and was obsessive about it. That's ALL we did in my house growing up...listen to music. He would even quiz me, lol! It use to annoy me, but now I'm grateful. He loved music and he just wanted me to love it to, and now I do.
My mom never really cared for music. She would listen to the radio in the car, but that was about it.
So, what about you?
Wow... if only I had parents as cool as yours! LOL
My Dad, to this day, is convinced there are 2 types of music: country and western. His list was:
Hank Williams SENIOR
Kenny Rodgers
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson
Dolly Parton
and his one detour- Elvis.
He forbid any other types of music in the house. However, there was a substantial age gap between him and my Mom- he was serving in Viet Nam when my mom was barely a teenager! (They were 29 and 17 when they married.) So... my Mom was the Disco queen, and when my Dad left for work, she would pull up the floorboards and break out her 8tracks and we'd dance all day until my Dad would get home. Her list includes:

Gloria Gaynor
Donna Summer
The Jackson 5
well, you know the list!
Then MTV premiered in 1981 (I know, I'm old)... and I got a lot of Michael Jackson and Madonna, and of course, The Buggles ("Video Killed the Radio Star").
As I got older, I gravitated to thrash metal and hair bands- Guns'n'Roses, Gwar, Motley Crue, Metalica... which both of my parents told me wasn't music, it was just noise.
Ironically, I ended up becoming a professional JAZZ musician, and I do classical gigs when I need some money! I have also been known to play a little ska here and there. LOL Neither of my parents LIKE or UNDERSTAND what I play, but they support it by buying tickets to shows (and later, giving me some reason why their seats were empty). Hahaha.
But, I still appreciate the strange musical background they gave me, and still listen to (and LOVE) pretty much anything with a beat!
