Jazz veterans: what Miles Davis album would you recommend BESIDES Kind of Blue?
I already have that one, and In a Silent Way. I love both.
I can't really get into avant-garde jazz, so I kind of have mixed thoughts on Bitches' Brew, at least what I've heard of it. I liked Coltrane's A Love Supreme, so I could probably bear through something like that?
Any recommendations?
'Milestones (1958)', the album right before 'Kind Of Blue (1959)' is amazing. This is the album where Miles Davis begins to experiment with Modal Jazz on certain tracks. He completes this turn to Modal Jazz on his next album 'Kind Of Blue', which you already have. Also, this is one of Miles Davis' fastest albums - and John Coltrane seems to want to one-up Davis on his album 'Giant Steps' released a year later. (Compare 'Milestones' with 'Giant Steps'. Both are amazing albums.)
So, 'Milestones' is part of the peak of Hard Bop - right up to the point when the turn towards Modal Jazz was new and slight.
In 1959 and into the early 60's, the Modal Jazz turn was complete - along with Jazz Fusion and Free Jazz beginning to stand on the other 2 legs of that stool, which gave birth to some of the greatest Jazz Albums ever made in my opinion.
