Question for black people out there?
I just received an interesting e-mail from another Y!A member that read like this:
As crazy as it sounds
-- the U.S. government
[due to racism & wanting to
stigmatize the part of their
lineage that was from Africa
which, by the way, is only
one part of their lineage]
--- has labeled those people
whose ancestors were
chattel-slaves, as being AAs
(the hyphen is used in reference
to acknowledging the fact that most
of them are Mixed-Race, with
African & non-African blood lines)
AND
has labeled those people
who are immigrants who
are directly from African and
arrived volitionally , as being BAs
(with the word 'Black' used in
reference to acknowledging
the fact that they are of a
Mono-racial full-Black lineage). --
Ok, I've personally always felt that "african-americans" are recent first-generation african immigrants and the rest of us are just plain ole' black folks.
But feel free to discuss amongst yourselves....
Its true the "African American" label denotes us as mixed heritage....and Africans as black......
I was in a restaurant with a Canadian couple once and referred myself as black....and they look at me as if they were appalled......and the wife blurted out YOUR not black and pointed to another lady in the restaurant (the owner of the restaurant of Jamaican decent) and said she's black your what we (Canadians) call "brown---and African American.....and I'm sitting there like ........oh my! another label has been stuck on my forehead.......
I'm "Brown African American".........LOL
Edit: I think she actually said "Brown American" the African didn't sit well with her........
