Decent Jazz artists worth listening to?
I am trying to become a better jazz musician, and I need some pretty good sax players to listen to. Ive already got guys like Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, Sonny Stitt and others, but if you guys know any people that have decent records on itunes or just some mp3's, recommend me. So, to sum it up, What do you recommend as "good" jazz?
If you found Konitz and Stitt on your own, I don't think you have much to worry about. Everyone knows Parker. Smooth jazz, being neither smooth nor jazz, makes me want to take sedatives to contain my rage.
In a similar vein, I enjoy Sonny Rollins, Stanley Turrentine, Cannonball Adderly, Wardell Gray and Dexter Gordon.
On alto, Hank Crawford was good before CTI and Quincey Jones got their hooks in him. So is Lockjaw Davis.
Sidney Bechet of New Orleans was a soprano sax master who began as a Dixieland player, and as someone who grew up in New Orleans, I remember music pouring out of working class houses, much of it Dixieland, in the 1960s. It is a clear foundation for all jazz and not to be dismissed.
I highly recommend the film "Round Midnight."
