I just flew on an Air India 747-400 to London. From the outside it seemed really?
intriguing and glamorous (and huge!). But when I stepped in and took my seat I could see why this plane is being phased out. First of all, I felt like I had entered an 80's time warp. The interior decor was aged, ragged, and had ugly, garish colors. The seats were narrow and uncomfortable, with many armrests that did not move.
My question is, does Boeing have plans of building an updated version of this aircraft, to compete with the A380? Because if this airplane was any indication of how ALL 747's are on the inside, then Airbus has easily won with its modern A380.
You are faulting the aircraft for amenities and specifications from the airline that bought it. Airlines dictate the number of seats, spacing between them, interior and exterior colors, as well as interior materials. Chances are, that plane you flew in is probably over a decade old, so it has some wear and tear form many miles of use.
In the States, American Airlines has one of the oldest fleets. Every time I step in an AA plane, it is usually form the early 90's vintage. So it will have a more dated look than a newer plane, and a majority of their fleet consists of Airbus planes. By your same line of logic, does that mean that Airbus is at fault?
The 747 already won the pissing contest with the A380 for all practical purposes. It is a 40 year old proven design that can land at about 90% of the world's airports with no need for special structures or runway modifications. It can even land at Princess Juliana airport in St Maarten. I'd love to see an A380 attempt that feat.
