Why do some radios that we buy or bought past 25 years, not have a mono/stereo switch? Need better mono rec.?
Electronic companies think they are so clever to get excellent FM reception for far-out stations--in stereo! But they don't. They should have a mono switch to eliminate static, and settle for mono, without static. You may have seen this lack of mono option, especially with car stereos.
Because the radio detects if the program is stereo and makes the switch for you. Stereo has a pilot tone that not only tells the radio to receive stereo, but is also part of the stereo decoding process. This pilot tone is transmitted at a low level so that in weak reception areas, the radio won't receive the pilot, and switches over to mono for static free listening automatically. Normally the radio has an indicator if it is receiving the stereo pilot. for a long time, people watched the beacon as a kind of tuning indicator, and if not lit, would tune to another station. broadcasters caught on, so now they transmit the pilot whether the program is stereo or not. broadcasters put a LOT of pressure on the manufacturer's of the IC chips used in the radios to make them so they would stay on stereo for as weak a signal as possible knowing that if the beacon went out, listeners would tune to a different station. So the automatic selection of mono mode does not work as effectively as it should in car radios. Have you tried listening to HD FM radio? If you can receive it, the quality does not deteriorate with distance.
FYI, what killed the manual mono switch in home receivers was the elimination of the phonograph inputs. A mono switch is only necessary if you try and play a mono record on a turntable equiped with a stereo pickup. So blame the demise of record player sales for the loss of the switch.
