What causes a HIGH level of natural 'killer cells'?
I've had two miscarriages last year and had some blood tests earlier this year. The result for the natural killer cells has come back as high. This would explain the miscarriages, as these 'killer cells' are part of the immune system, and attack the embryo, thinking it's a cancer/invader, thus resulting in a miscarriage.
My question is ~ What causes high levels of these killer cells, and how can you reduce them? Is it linked to your lifestyle/diet?
I'm afraid it isn't really related to lifestlye or diet - its just your body going a bit bizarre. The body actually produces T-killer cells to fight off your body cells when they become infected/cancerous or even to destroy parasite cells. T-killers go around the body checking a special protein 'flag' that is posted on all your cells, telling the body what they are making and what they are. If your killer cell comes across a flag showing the cell is making something foreign, or saying that the cell shouldn't be there, it attacks and kills the cell. In mice (see the resource below) its been shown that special proteins that go around their body switch on or switch off the flags; if its foreign it switched it off and the immune system attacks and visa versa. There are lots and lots of autoimmune diseases (diseases where your immune system attacks the body - see second source), some can be treated and some can't. An example of treatment is immuosuppresive drugs which are quite dangerous, stopping your immune system and making you extremely vulnerable to illness (for example a simple virus like the common cold would have the potential to kill you). However, I'm not a doctor and there's just too many possibilities of the causes etc. I hope this helps.
