How many people do you know who claim the label Christian and believe that Jesus was a great teacher but not?
a divine sacrifice as atonement for the sins of the world?
My mom is one of those, actually.
She used to be a very devout Lutheran, but has softened her views gradually over the last fifteen years or so. Old age has made her more... well... "new age" (how I abhor that term!).
She is comfortable saying that she is a Christian, admires Jesus for all of the good things about him, and actively participates in church (albeit less than she once did). She's not quite so fixated on the idea of sin or atonement. It's ceased to be relevant in the more Unitarian Universalist way she sees the world. Although... she's still a card-carrying Lutheran.
