Original Master Recording
I want to install Fedora core 6 on my HP nx7400 Laptop retaining original windows xp and restore partition.?
The computer has two partitions one with windows xp installed and the other has restore partition.
I have lost my recovery dvds which could be made only once.
Linux installation might wipe out the original master boot record and hence the option to restore windows (there is an option to do so before the windows loads)
How should i go about installing Fedora Core 6.
Can another set of recovery dvd s be burned(some way to cross the limitation exerted by the manufacturer) or can i use some other HP cds to recover the windows on my system(i heard that manufacturers lock the wiindows with the bios so that might not be possible to do)

the recovery portion of the hard drive has all the files needed to reinstall windows, it is usually setup as a destructive recovery meaning that all the files and programs will be overwritten and the pc will be returned to the state is was in when you got it....some however allow you to leave your files intact but will overwrite the rest so you would have to reinstall all the programs. As far as creating a recovery disc from the system, you can make as many as you want....as long as you have a burner and the recovery program....you could just copy the i386 folder onto a disc and have the majority of the files needed for windows to install....and at the same time add your files and folders and make a backup disc with all your info. There should be a manufacturers disc that came with the pc to reinstall the OS as they cannot guarantee the hard drive will not fail, there has to be a second option. As far as installing Linux, depending on the build you may be able to run it from the disc, and not have to install it all...there are several out there that run from the disc and can be set to boot from the disc and not load your current OS at all...Knoppix is one of these, it runs from the disc and boots up prior to windows...can be saved to the hard drive and set to be one of the bootup option without having to partition the hard drive at all. Other version do need to be added to a partition but they leave the current system intact, and only "add" a partition to the unused space of a harddrive....
General rule of thumb...before trying anything new that could potentially cause your OS to be compromised, backup everything on external media (hard drive, discs, flash drive) and read as much as you can about what you are about to do.
