Can I be charged for Reckless Endangerment on private property?
I was driving my truck while a matress was being towed and my friend was on it. The strap broke and he hit a fence pole and came out with scratches. The family doesn't want to press charges but the police say I might get charged, even though it was private property. Can they do that? and what kind of punishment am I looking at? It was in California and im a minor.
Certain traffic laws do not apply on private property...for instance, a speed limit does not apply. And if a store puts up stop signs, someone who runs such a sign would (generally) not be charged with failure to yield.
However...
Some things...like drunk driving...are enforced on private property.
All of that is immaterial since you Reckless Endangerment is not a crime under a traffic statute, so it is enforceable on all property...like murder.
Anyhow, you may be charged, and if you are..get a lawyer.
