'Sun Goddess' by Ramsey Lewis - Similar Feel?
Everytime I hear 'Sun Goddess', I get chills up my spine. There is something almost mystic about the melody, the vocal harmonies, the rhythm and the sax solo that touches me to my core. I never get tired of listening to it.
Are there songs that effect you in the same way? Please share them with me.
Yes, some songs seem to be tuned into the forces of nature. Or you might say, right out of heaven. There are a few that I can think of without trying to hard...
Ghetto Lights
was written by Andrew Hill. The Bobby Hutcherson album called Dialogue has an amazing version. Sam Rivers plays bass clarinet. The whole band works as a whole. Richard Davis plays a simple, bass line, always choosing the right note.
Orange Was the Color of Her Dress Then Blue Silk
and
Meditations (on Integration)
from the Cornell 1964 album by the Mingus sextet. You can hear Mingus making HAPPY remarks during this concert. To me, Jaki Byard was at his best on this show. The telepathy between Byard and Mingus During Orange is great. They play like one person. I wouldn't have minded if they just did a duet for that song.
Meditations is 30 minutes long, and great the whole time. There are more changes and musical ideas in that song than a lot of composers will create in a decade of writings. That song is an interesting novel.
I Can't Get Started
Booker Ervin covers it on his Space Book album. Ervin's solo is divine. Byard, Richard Davis and Alan Dawson creating a constantly changing palette for for Ervin. For me, its the tops. I prefer his Freedom Book album, but this song is the one I remember the most from either.
If I Should Loose You
Booker Little's version is great. Its all about Little's solo. Its so sad, so well done. Tasteful.
The Inflated Tear
Roland Kirk. I can't comment on it. Its strong, its fragile, its so many things. How do you write a song like that?
Fleurette Africine (the African Flower)
James Neweton had a great band help him do covers of Ellington/Strayhorn songs. This song is tuned into the natural forces.
Chelsea Bridge
I think the version I'm thinking of is from 1980. Ella Fitzgerald sings just moans and hums the whole song, no words. Its perfect.
Spectrum
On Andrew Hill's Point of Departure. A big reason its so great, DOLPHY.
Somewhere (from West Side Story)
Mike Mainieri's version with Joe Lovano playing VERY avant garde.
Bright Mississippi
From the Monk's Dream album. Charlie Rouse tears up that entire song. That band swings so hard that the listener gets struck with "jazz face".
John Brown's Gun
John Ellis did an album a few years ago that is a classic in my book. John Brown's Gun is just one of the tuned in songs on that album. The album was created from nothing by young jazz musicians, you can tell when you hear it. It is a potent album.
