Rare Country
How would a rare reptile find it's way into my part of country?
I live in SE Kent in the town of Folkestone and I wonder how a rare reptile could find it's way where I am. I was walking the North downs near a cornfield and on a footpath and according to my books it matches the description of the very rare Smooth Snake. My books tell me that they are only seen in parts of Hampshire and Surrey. So would a stranger bring from those parts or did it come cross country to Kent.
I'm not sure how far apart the distance is of which you are speaking but the way weather has been changing, it is entirely possible to see species in your area that have not been encountered before. In the US., when we first moved to Missouri about 27 years ago, Armadillos were not here, only in Arkansas. Now they are everywhere. Last year we started having the Giant Pine Cockroaches from the South. If a person has lived in a given area for a lengthy time, they are sure to notice changes. You may want to notify local conservation agents or whatever the British term is for such because they and Scientists as well are interested in species arrival in new habitats.
