What is this star i saw in the sky?
I just went for a walk, i live in Alberta, Canada.
It's about 11:45 PM here and i went for a walk looking up at the stars, i was looking at a very bright pink colored star or planet i thought might be mercury. So, i turned around to look behind me and then i saw a VERY bright flash of a dim star for about 2 seconds, then it just vanished out of sight. What could this have been? did i witness something rare?
Certainly wasn't Mercury. It sets (or rises) close to the sun. You may of spotted Mars, but hard to know for sure, without specifics such as the direction you were looking, height above the horizon and if you saw any recognizable nearby constellations.
The flash you saw could nearly be anything, sunlight glinting off of a solar panel of an orbiting satellite, aircraft strobe or even a meteor.
