How does a record store stereo sound?
I understand the idea behind records pretty well in terms of the groove on the record representing the analog waveform, but I'm not clear on how you'd get two channels from one groove unless you used horizontal movement for one channel and vertical for another which I'm almost sure is not the case.
You are surprisingly close to the truth!
The two audio channels are recorded as movement in 2 directions at 90 degrees to each other. Really hard to describe but easy with a drawing. Imagine you are looking at the groove in cross section. The two directions of movement for the two channels are at 45 degrees to the record surface. One leans toward the centre and the other leans toward the edge of the record.
the REALLY clever thing is that a stereo record player had to be able to play mono records as well. On a mono record the groove just moves from side to side. So what they did was to invert the phase of one stereo channel. This means that a mono groove corresponds to a stereo signal with identical channels, which is exactly what you want!
