Otis Redding (September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967) was an American soul singer. According to the website of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (where he was inducted in 1989), Redding's name is "synonymous with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm and blues into a form of funky, secular testifying."

I first "met" Otis Redding in 1982, when I was 14 years old. My first love's mom would put on all sorts of records, and we'd dance in the kitchen. At the time, I was struck by the love and emotion in the room, but I thought it was all coming from her wonderful hugs and his big blue eyes.

Skip forward a few years, and me and my boyfriend (a different one, with hazel eyes) skipped school so we could watch the first screening of the new John Hughes movie, "Pretty in Pink." That's when I met Otis for the second time:

And that's when I realized that at least part of the emotion in that kitchen was coming from that smooth voice coming out of the stereo while we danced around the table.

Somewhere along the way, I'd picked up the information that Otis was gone, but I didn't know the details. Being a detail girl, after the movie, we went to the library, and I looked him up. For some reason, I was really saddened that he died a mere two months before I was born. I wanted to have at least shared the planet with him for a bit. But what I realized that day, standing in the library, hoping the cops didn't bust us for not being in school, was that I was still sharing the planet with him--he left behind an amazing legacy. And some great music for dancing around the kitchen table.

He will always be, to me, more than a man of 26. He will always be the sound of love, and good feelings, and a special kind of warmth.

And maybe that's all that matters.
