When a steady stream of water drops wears a hole in a rock..?
WHat is happening at the molecular/atomic level? Does water's ability to wear rock have anything to do witht he fact it's polar, or would a steady stream of oil drops work just as well?
weathering of rock is really an acid-base reaction, with the slightly acidic water (due to the present of dissolved CO2) dissolving the silicates of the rock. Rain acidified by sulfuric acid and nitric acid will weather rocks faster than rain containing only CO2.
Oil is not nearly as acidic as water because when CO2 dissolves in oil it doesn't form carbonic acid. Therefore, oil would not weather rocks to the same extent as water.
