Exhanges and Receipts - New Policy?
I got two albums, for Christmas, from my Grandma (Linkin Park's 'Minutes to Midnight' and Avenged Sevenfold's self titled album).
I already have them, but I didn't like to tell her that as I could tell she'd put a lot of thought into it.
I just said 'thank you' and decided to take them back to HMV (where she bought them) and exchange them.
However, they told us that their policy has changed, now, and you can't exchange anything without a receipt.
I haven't played either of the discs and they still have the packaging that they came with (the 'sealed protection' sticker) which proves they haven't been used - normally this should be accepted for an exchange, even without a receipt.
Can anyone tell me - is this a new policy due to the credit crunch, or are they fobbing us off and I should try again in another HMV branch?
Any advice/information would help.

As I understand it, by law they are obliged to give an exchange if you can prove they where bought at one of their shops - even without a receipt. A refund would be different though. It seems they are just being awkward - after all if you are exchanging for same value goods - they are not loosing out.
Check with your local consumer affairs office or citizens advice.
Edit:
Company policy notices are often not worth the paper they are written on - you have consumer rights by law. But do check this as I mentioned.
BTW I worked in retail for ten years and have seen this from both sides of the arguement.
