Examples of famous composers who got their start with amateur orchestras?
I read that Elgar's first large scale orchestral work, "King Olaf", was premiered by the Staffordshire orchestra before he was famous. Before there was “Don Juan”, or “Also Sprach Zarathustra”, Richard Strauss’s “Festive March” was premiered by Wilde Gungl Amateur Orchestra. More recently, John Adams’s first orchestral work, “Suite for String Orchestra” was premiered by The New Hampshire State Hospital Auxiliary Orchestra. Are there any other examples of composers who went on to achieve success who's earliest triumphs came from community orchestras?
Hmm - I sense a sub-text here. Yes, those composers might have had their works PERFORMED by lesser orchestras - but that does not mean that the COMPOSERS were *working their way up*; they were not *learning* as they want along, in most cases - they just had not yet had the recognition that would allow them access to top orchestras. Griffes slaved away in boys' school, and nobody there had a CLUE that he was the talent he was. There are countless other stories - you must know most of them - where people worked for the government or insurance, or countless other non-artistic tasks, and composed the whole while. So - they did not really *get their start* as it were, with local groups - they just were not recognized yet.
There are probably some geniuses who have their works posted in the Finale site - and just have not had anyone recognized to play them yet. Different times - same principle.
