What do you think of classical guitar pieces played on steel string guitar?
I find I like classical pieces more played on steel strung guitar. I'm learning some myself at the moment and really liking the sound.
The pursists won't agree with me but if playing on a steel string gives you the quality of sound that you are personally looking for - go for it. I have seen some really hot metal and shred played using finger-style on electric guitar.
I find that the neck on the average steel string a bit narrow (less than 2'') so the strings are closer to one another making it difficult for the picking fingers to hook into and it is also harder on your nails. I have to assume that you are working P I M A E and no just P I or P M.
I also found the action on my steel string to be a bit too low for accurate picking. Too much fret buzz as well. (I am a bit of a speed freak on steel so my action is a bit lower than standard)
Perhaps I didn't have the right type of acoustic steel string to carry it off with but I simply could not capture the warmth of nylon strings using steel. Lets face it the sound of nylon on a good cedar top is just too much.
The only real limiting factor on a classical guitar is the workable length of the neck.... at fret 14 you start having problems because chords become a bit awkward. So the way around this is to get a cut -away style guitar. You can do Bach nicely up to fret 19. (Must say I miss the last two frets from 19 to 21 of my Strat.)
