Am I the only person in the world who appreciates the geniuses that are Steely Dan?
every single one of my friends HATES the Dan, and says it's "too smooth", or "too AM".
I listen to Steely Dan and i hear pure musical genius, with intelligent & subversive & cynical lyrics. Why can't everyone else hear this?
it's just about the funkiest music ever made by white men.
Your friends are morons; find new ones immediately. While it is true that Steely Dan's albums are very slick productions, like so much of the "smooth jazz" crapola out there, the melodic and chordal structures are light years ahead of most smooth jazz and nearly all rock/pop. And any band that hires Pete Christlieb or Phil Woods or Wayne Shorter to play sax is hardly playing smooth jazz. And that's just the music. Lyrically, Donald Fagen has shown himself to be ... well, kind of a sick f__k, actually, but a hugely talented one. Unfortunately one needs an I.Q. in triple digits to understand them, something your friends apparently lack. I'm telling you, it's time to move on.
